The Slocum-Dickson Medical Group Laboratory provides a full range of pathology clinical services. The laboratory provides a broad range of specialized tests to support the needs of primary care physicians and specialists. The laboratory accepts patients from various referral sources, including physicians outside Slocum-Dickson Medical Group. The laboratory is licensed by the New York State Department of Health and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
Our laboratory director, a board-certified pathologist, is readily available for professional consultation on test selection, order clarification, and results interpretation. With a dedicated staff of approximately 30 technologists, technicians, and laboratory support personnel, we perform more than 320,000 tests annually, ensuring that our medical testing services are accessible and reliable.
The Laboratory Professionals at Slocum-Dickson play an essential role in providing quality, comprehensive healthcare to our patients. The information gathered by our Laboratory Professionals assists our physicians in diagnosing and preventing disease, making us a vital part of medical testing.
The laboratory provides a full range of medical laboratory pathology clinical services. Testing areas include hematology/coagulation, chemistry, special chemistry, and microbiology.
Inside the Laboratory at Slocum-Dickson
Clerical
Our clerical team performs a variety of functions, from assisting patients as they check in to preparing lab work. Our receptionists help patients schedule their lab work, process paperwork, and gather insurance information. Other clerical team members assign codes to laboratory requisitions for use by insurance providers and carry out computer order entry and filing.
Phlebotomists
Our team of phlebotomists are responsible for drawing blood, performing bleeding times, collecting specimens, and checking glucose levels. Phlebotomists interact directly with our patients always keeping the safety and comfort of our patients in mind.
Processing
Our processing team prepares the blood and body fluids for testing. The blood and/or body fluid that has been collected is placed in a centrifuge that rapidly spins the sample to separate the cells and other matter from the blood or fluid. A majority of the medical tests are performed only on the serum or plasma components of the blood.
Testing
Hematology/Coagulation
Our Hematology team conducts tests that are used to detect possible hematological disorders. These tests help the physician make a diagnosis or rule out possible disorders. Hematology testing can also be used to monitor the effect of radiation or chemothrapy on a patient. Some of the hematology tests that are performed include; complete blood count (CBC), white blood count (WBC), and red blood count (RBC), as well as Hemoglobin, Platelets, and Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR).
Coagulation, also known as Hemostasis, is the ability of the blood to form clots and dissolve clots. Our laboratorians run tests that are able to help the physician detect coagulation abnormalities and monitor the effect of medications used to treat them.
Chemistry
Our chemistry team examines the chemicals and hormones found in the blood and bodily fluids. They perform tests such as blood glucose and cholesterol.
Special Chemistry
Our special chemistry team performs tests such as; thyroid function, cancer antigens, hormone levels, and prostate specific antigens.
Microbiology
Our microbiology team performs tests that allow them to identify the presence of bacteria within bodily fluids and tissue that can cause infection.
