Stereotactic Biopsy

If the results of your mammogram indicate that further examination is needed, your physician could recommend that a biopsy be conducted to obtain more information. A Stereotactic core biopsy will allow the physician to obtain a sample of your breast tissue for analysis. Stereotactic biopsy uses a computer-guided imaging system to precisely locate the area of interest and the breast tissue is removed using a hollow needle.

Prior to the Exam

  • You will be instructed to discontinue any aspirin or blood thinners you may be taking.
  • You’ll be asked to stop these medications 5-10 days prior to the exam. Other regular medications should be taken as prescribed. Consult your physician regarding your medication.
  • Dress comfortably for the procedure. Clothing should consist of a separate top and bottom piece.
  • Refrain from using talcum powder or deodorant the day of the procedure.

During the Exam

  • Your physician and technologist will perform the exam from beneath you as you lie face down on the table. The table top is specially designed with an opening for your breast to be placed in. Once you are comfortably in place the table top will be raised to begin the procedure.
  • During the procedure your breast will be slightly compressed and held in position. Periodically, you will be asked to hold your breath shortly while x-rays are taken. The skin of the breast will be injected will a local anesthetic so no pain will be felt during the procedure. You may feel slight pressure during the procedure. A hollow sampling needle will be inserted into the breast to extract pieces of tissue.
  • During the procedure, the biopsy instrument may emit a humming sound. Five or six tissue samples will be taken and then sent to the laboratory for analysis.
  • The physician and technologist will talk to you throughout the procedure to keep you updated on what is taking place. They may give you special instructions to help assist them during the procedure.

After the Exam

  • After the exam, the area where the needle was inserted will be bandaged to stop any bleeding. A cold pack will be applied to the area to relieve any swelling or bruising. If discomfort persists, you may take a non-aspirin pain reliever like Tylenol every four to six hours.
  • Any bruising of the area should subside within five to seven days. If you notice any excessive swelling, bleeding, drainage, redness or heat, please call:
    The Breast Care Center
    at (315) 798-1436
  • The results of your exam are usually available within two days. Please schedule an appointment to discuss findings.
