The type of preparation needed for your ultrasound depends on the type of Ultrasound you doctor has ordered. If you are unsure of what type of ultrasound you are having please contact the Radiology Department in advance of your test date. Failure to properly prep for your exam may result in delay or cancellation of your procedure.
- Ultrasounds of the abdomen, gall bladder or liver: eat a fat-free dinner the night before your exam. Fast (nothing to eat or drink) after midnight. Infants and children 5 and under do not need to fast.
- Ultrasound of the kidney: scheduled in the AM requires fasting (nothing to eat or drink) after midnight. If scheduled for a PM appointment fast (nothing to eat or drink) for 4 hours prior to scheduled exam.
- Ultrasound of the pelvis: administer a fleet enema the night before or morning of the exam. This exam requires a FULL bladder, 36 ounces or more of any type of liquid 1 hour prior to arrival for test. I
- Ultrasound of abdomen and pelvis together: administer a fleet enema the night before or morning of the exam. This exam requires a FULL bladder, 36 ounces or more of any type of liquid 1 hour prior to arrival for test. If scheduled for AM fast (nothing to eat or drink) after midnight. If scheduled for PM eat a light nonfat breakfast only.
- Ultrasound for prenatal (Obstetric) patients 25 weeks and under requires a FULL bladder, 36 ounces or more of any type of liquid 1 hour prior to exam.
- Ultrasounds of the breast, carotid or thyroid require no preparation.
