JOB SUMMARY:     Performs tasks under the realm of professional license.  Answers directly to clinical managers and Director of Clinical Services.  Works under the direction of licensed physicians physician-extenders performing work-related duties as required. Triages, assesses, and treats patients requiring the services of Urgent Care.


  1. Assesses the needs of patients (psychological, psychosocial, and educational) and is responsible for patient health teaching and counseling.
  2. Responsible for triaging in-coming calls, conveys messages to appropriate areas. Takes appropriate action with acute problems and change of condition.
  3. Assists the physician with examinations and procedures.
  4. Provides direct care to the patient per physician order (administers prescribed medications, initiates IV therapy, performs treatments/order).
  5. Documents phone messages, patient teaching, and appropriate information in patient’s medical record.
  6. Recognizes emergency situations and initiates nursing interventions appropriate to scope of practice. Has experience managing patients experiencing Chest Pain, Respiratory Distress, Stroke/CVA, etc.
  7. Practices principles of infection control and safety.
  8. Maintains confidentiality of all information regarding their patients.
  9. Displays concise and clear communication skills.
  10. Conducts point-of-care testing, e.g. Peak Flow, Snellen Visual Acuity, Rapid Strep, Glucose Monitoring, Urine Dipstick, Urine HCG, & 12 Lead ECG.
  11. Maintains good public relations with other departments, MD’s, patients, and families.
  12. Demonstrates good customer service skills.
  13. Maintains professional atmosphere within the department.
  14. Attends OSHA at initial employee orientation and annually thereafter.
  15. Clinical staff in Urgent Care will follow up with patients when required by the Lab.

RELATIONSHIP WITH OTHERS: Direct relationship with patients/families, physicians and staff.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE: Graduation from accredited school of nursing, current New York State License.  Must exhibit excellent customer service skills at all times.  All RN’s are required to be trained in Basic Life Support (BLS) within 90 days of their start date.  Specialty RN’s are required to be trained in Advanced Life Support (ALS).  This training will be performed by our Clinical Educator and/or Clinical Coordinator at no cost to the staff, with the exception of a nominal fee to cover training materials where applicable.  The staff member will be paid for attending the class as this is a requirement of their job.  It is the employee responsibility to keep this training current.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Classification of work level: Heavy.  Requires sitting, standing, bending and reaching.  May require lifting up to 50 pounds using proper body mechanics.  Requires manual dexterity to operate standard office equipment such as computer, fax and telephone.  Requires hearing and vision that is adequate to perform job duties.
