What is a Plastic Surgeon?

The term “plastic” comes from the Greek word “plastikos” meaning to mold or give form. Plastic Surgery does just that – it gives new form to the human body. The specialty includes two kinds of procedures – Reconstructive Surgery, or procedures done to repair birth defects and deformities caused by accidents and disease; and cosmetic surgery, including facelifts, nose reshaping, fat suction, and other procedures done to enhance appearance.

A plastic surgeon’s education includes 4 years in medical school, full training in all aspects of general surgery (usually 5 years) and special fellowship training (at least 2 years) in plastic surgery. Only after at least two years of practice and submitting to rigorous written and oral examinations does the surgeon earn Board Certification. (Any doctor can call himself a plastic surgeon. Be certain your plastic surgeon is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and a member of the American Society of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeons.)
