What is Botox?
Botox injections are made from botulinum toxin, which temporarily prevents a muscle from moving by weakening or paralyzing the muscle. Botox is a medical drug doctors have been using for years to treat wrinkles, facial creases, and some medical conditions and give a more youthful and vibrant look. It is a fairly quick and minimally invasive procedure that can last up to six months.
What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers help to diminish facial lines and restore volume and fullness in the face. As we age, our faces naturally lose subcutaneous fat. Dermal fillers help to correctly moderate-to-severe facial wrinkles and skin folds, increasing the fullness of lips, cheeks, chin, under-eye hollows, jawline, and back of the hand. Some dermal fillers can last for six to twelve months, while other dermal fillers can last up to five years.
Should you get Botox or cosmetic dermal fillers?
While Botox is made from botulinum toxin, dermal fillers are made from other natural or synthetic materials, such as hyaluronic acid, a natural compound that aids in the production of collagen and elastin. Botox is better used for dynamic wrinkles, which occur when the face is making an expression or motion. Dermal fillers are usually used to help restore fullness to one’s face or for static wrinkles, which are visible when a person’s face is at rest. Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery Questions and Answers
What is a Plastic Surgeon?
The term “plastic” comes from the Greek word “plastikos” meaning to mold or give form. Plastic Surgery does just that – it gives new form to the human body. The specialty includes two kinds of procedures – Reconstructive Surgery and cosmetic surgery.
A plastic surgeon’s education includes 4 years in medical school, full training in all aspects of general surgery (usually 5 years), and special fellowship training (at least 2 years) in plastic surgery. Both Dr. Barrientos and Dr. Potts have completed fellowship training in their area of expertise. Dr. Barrientos completed a Fellowship in Wound Care and an additional Pediatric Craniofacial Fellowship. He specializes in cosmetic plastic surgery as well as pediatric facial reconstruction. Dr. Potts completed an Orthopedic Hand Surgery Fellowship and he specializes in hand surgery and reconstruction. Slocum-Dickson Plastic Surgery Department provides comprehensive care for all plastic surgery patients in Central New York and beyond.
What is a Plastic Hand Surgeon?
Hand surgery is a broad term that encompasses a wide range of procedures. Plastic surgeons who perform hand surgery aim to restore function to the hand and fingers. However, hand surgeons also strive to make the hand appear as natural as possible.
This highly specialized surgery can treat ailments that cause pain and impair your wrist and finger strength, function, and flexibility. Surgery aims to restore function to fingers and hands injured by disease, trauma, and to correct birth defects. The goal is to restore hand and finger functionality to near normal and to reduce pain.
What is the difference between reconstructive plastic surgery and cosmetic surgery?
There are two different types of plastic surgery offered. There are reconstructive plastic surgery and cosmetic plastic surgery. Reconstructive plastic surgery is performed to restore functionality or make changes to appearance after injury, disease, congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, or trauma. Cosmetic plastic surgery is where a person chooses to have an operation to change their physical appearance for cosmetic reasons rather than medically necessary reasons. Cosmetic surgery can include botox, filler, facelifts, nose reshaping, fat suction, Brazilian butt lift, breast lift, and much more. If you are looking to have reconstructive or cosmetic surgery done, please contact one of our incredibly skilled physicians to schedule a consultation.
