What is Dermatology?

Dermatology is the study of the skin, hair, and nails. Knowing that the skin is often the window to the body and soul, medical and cosmetic dermatology involves the diagnosis, treatment, and enhancement of problematic skin and appearance issues. Dermatologists are medically trained experts on the science and knowledge of different organ systems and how their proper function is related to the skin, hair, and nails. SDMG Dermatology welcomes patients of all ages.

Dermatology Phototherapy Clinic

(315) 624-1987

Slocum-Dickson’s Utica, NY, Dermatology Office offers a Dermatology Phototherapy Clinic.

Phototherapy

Ultraviolet light therapy effectively treats some skin diseases such as eczema, psoriasis, and vitiligo. Regularly exposing affected skin cells to light can slow their growth.   We use artificial ultraviolet (UV) light to activate biologic processes that reduce inflammation and prevent skin cells from growing too quickly. Exposing the affected area to this type of light on a regular basis reduces inflammation and aids in skin clearing.

Light Therapy

If you have a severe skin condition that requires treatment other than prescription medications, light therapy may be beneficial. The Slocum-Dickson Dermatology Phototherapy Clinic delivers skin-soothing light therapy using special medical lighting devices.

We Offer Medical, Surgical and Cosmetic Services for All Dermatology Conditions Including

Acne: Acne is an extremely common skin condition that develops when hair follicles on the face become clogged with dead skin cells and oil. SDMG’s dermatologists can help diagnose the underlying causes of acne and provide appropriate treatment options.

Athlete’s foot: A fungal infection that thrives in warm, moist conditions, athlete’s foot usually begins between the toes. A common cause is wearing non-breathable socks and shoes that cause the feet to sweat and not have a chance to dry.

Cold sores: Also known as fever blisters, cold sores are a common viral infection. They are tiny, fluid-filled blisters on and around your lips.

Cosmetic and Laser Dermatology: Using light therapy-based procedures, injectables, and laser treatments, Slocum-Dickson’s physicians offer cosmetic procedures to enhance and improve your appearance.

Skin infections: Skin infections can be caused by bacteria, fungus, viruses, or parasites. Our dermatologist can assess your condition and provide treatment options to relieve discomfort and clear up the infection.

Nail problems: Common fingernail and toenail problems include injury, infection and skin diseases such as eczema and psoriasis.

Skin cancers: Caused by the abnormal growth/reproduction of skin cells, skin cancer can be detected early through regular skin checks by your dermatologist. SDMG’s Utica, NY dermatologists can provide sun protection guidance, as well as advise of skin changes that could necessitate a visit to our office.

Psoriasis: Psoriasis is a skin disorder originating with the immune system, causing skin cells to multiply three to four times faster than normal. Symptoms include a rash with itchy, scaly patches, most commonly on the knees, elbows, trunk, and scalp.

Eczema: Eczema is an inflammatory skin condition that goes by names including atopic dermatitis, atopic eczema, dermatitis, and more. Common symptoms include itchiness, dry skin, rashes, scaly patches, blisters, and skin infections.

Hair loss: Hair loss can have genetic and physiological causes. Hereditary hair loss with age is the most common cause of baldness.

Warts: Warts are small, noncancerous growths that are caused by a virus. The human papillomavirus (HPB) family triggers extra cell growth, most commonly on the hands and feet.

Rashes: A rash is an area of irritated or swollen skin. Many rashes are itchy, red, painful, and irritated and can interfere with daily activities. Our Utica, NY, dermatologists can assess your symptoms and provide an appropriate course of treatment.

Photo Therapy: Also known as light therapy, phototherapy takes advantage of the healing effects of ultraviolet (UV) light and is used to treat skin diseases like psoriasis, eczema, dermatitis, or vitiligo.

Dermatology Frequently Asked Questions

A dermatologist is a physician who is trained to evaluate and manage pediatric and adult patients with benign and malignant disorders of the skin. A dermatologist has had additional training and experience in the following:

The diagnosis and treatment of skin cancers, melanomas, moles, and other tumors of the skin.
The management of contact dermatitis and other inflammatory skin disorders.
The recognition of the skin manifestations of systemic and infectious diseases.
Dermatopathology (the microscopic diagnosis of diseases of the skin).
Surgical techniques used in dermatology.

To be certified as a dermatologist, a physician must have had at least four years of post-graduate training accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. The first broad-based general clinical year is followed by three years of intensive training in dermatology including dermatopathology and dermatologic surgery. In addition to the successful completion of the four years of required training, the certification process includes a comprehensive examination administered by the American Board of Dermatology. With this background and knowledge, dermatologists are singularly qualified to diagnose and treat a wide variety of dermatologic conditions as well as benign and malignant skin tumors.

Medical dermatology focuses on diagnosing and treating skin conditions, diseases, and disorders. It involves the evaluation and management of a variety of skin conditions, such as acne, eczema, warts, psoriasis, skin cancer, and more. Medical dermatologists use a combination of physical examinations, medical history reviews, and diagnostic tests to determine the most appropriate course of treatment. Their goal is to target the “disease” aspect of skin issues and reduce the risks to skin and body health.

Cosmetic dermatology is more elective, and procedures normally focus on the aesthetic enhancement of the skin. Medical dermatology is an aspect of dermatology that targets the “disease” aspect of dermatology and treats skin ailments to reduce health risks.
