An Internal Medicine physician provides primary care for adult patients. This type of physician specializes in the prevention and treatment of adult diseases and the general health care of the patient. Because Internists have a wide range of medical knowledge, they are able to treat the whole person and provide quality life-long care.

Internal Medicine is devoted to the comprehensive care of adult patients and includes diagnosis and treatment of such problems as:

  • Heart disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Gastrointestinal problems
  • Arthritis and other joint problems
  • Allergies
  • Cancer
  • Anemia
  • Infections
  • Depression
  • Skin disease
  • Diabetes
  • Nutritional problems

Why do I need a primary care physician?

  • It is important to select a primary care physician because he or she will be responsible for about 90% of your health care, including referrals to internal medicine specialists, when required.
  • A primary care physician coordinates your medical care including referring you to the appropriate specialist when needed, ordering diagnostic tests and treatments, and answering questions regarding your health.
  • A primary care physician can provide continuity of care, including routine physicals, which can help prevent or detect the onset of certain diseases and conditions.
  • Establishing a relationship with a primary care physician allows him or her to understand your medical history better and gain knowledge about you overtime; therefore, when problems arise, a better diagnosis can be made.
