What is an Ophthalmologist?

An Ophthalmologist is a physician who is licensed to practice medicine and surgery, but who specializes in all aspects of eye and vision care. An ophthalmologist’s education typically includes four years of college, four years of medical school, one or more years of general hospital internship, and three or more years in a hospital-based eye residency program. In diagnosis and treatment the ophthalmologist uses and prescribes medicine, glasses, and contact lenses, and when necessary, performs eye surgery.

What is an Optometrist?

An Optometrist is a healthcare professional who specializes in eye care, focusing on the diagnosis, treatment and management of various vision problems and eye conditions. They conduct eye exams to assess vision and detect underlying issues. They can prescribe corrective lenses and refer patients to ophthalmologists for more complex conditions or surgical intervention.

Cataract Services

Higher quality vision equates to a better quality of life. If you have been diagnosed with cataracts or are struggling with cloudy vision, please call the office at (315) 798-1730 to schedule an appointment today.

What are Cataracts?

Cataracts are an age-related process where the natural lens grows cloudy. Symptoms include glare and halos, that can make it difficult to drive at
night.

How are Cataracts Diagnosed?

An annual exam to evaluate for this common curable condition is recommended.

How are Cataracts Corrected?

Once cataracts impact the vision, a simple surgical procedure to solve the problem is recommended. The out-patient surgery consists of removing the cloudy natural lens and replacing it with a new one. Recovery is fast and the results are life-changing.

Intraocular Lenses (IOLs) for Cataracts

These lenses are meant to provide good vision at one range of vision, usually distance vision. Patients will be expected to use glasses for intermediate and reading ranges while some patients will also require them to fine tune their distance vision.

These lenses are a lifestyle choice for patients to further decrease the need for glasses. There are many lenses available that can cater to individual needs, lifestyles, activities, and hobbies.

  • Astigmatism Correcting IOLs (Toric)
    • Toric IOLs are designed to correct the cataract and astigmatism at the same time of surgery resulting in better uncorrected distance vision. Patients will be required to wear glasses for all intermediate and near work.
    • Presbyopia Correcting IOLs
      •  Presbyopia correcting lenses are designed to diffract light allowing patients to see clearly at all ranges in vision, distance, intermediate, and near. Due to the design, a small percentage of patients may experience nighttime disphotopsias which appear as rings or halos around lights. This effect will get better over time as we adapt to the technology. Dr. Harris offers the Alcon Panoptix Trifocal and the Bausch & Lomb Envista Envy Trifocal technologies.
      • Extended Depth of Focus IOLs (EDOF)
        • EDOF lenses are designed to deliver better distance and intermediate vision as compared to a basic monofocal lens although, near vision may require a small prescription to enhance clarity. In less than 3% of cases, patients could experience similar nighttime disphotopsias but significantly less compared to a Trifocal IOL.
        • Light Adjustable IOLs (LAL)
        •  Light Adjustable IOLs are the only lenses designed to be customized after the surgery is performed. The lens is made of a special photosensitive material that when treated with UV light, it will change the power of the lens by changing the shape. Essentially, customizing the outcome of surgery to meet the specific needs of individual patients.
