What is Hematology and Oncology?

Hematology is the study of blood related disorders which include cancer and non-cancerous conditions. These conditions include those that occur in the blood and lymph systems of the body.

Oncology is the study of diseases within the body and is often referred to as the study of cancer. Cancer is a group of more than 100 diseases that have two important things in common. The first condition is that certain cells in the body become abnormal. Another is that the body keeps producing large numbers of these abnormal cells. Medical oncologists and hematologists have special expertise in the use of chemotherapy and other non-surgical treatments for cancer.

What Is A Medical Oncologist/Hematologist?

A Hematologist/Oncologist is a specialist in diseases of the blood and cancer. This specialist is a scientist who has received special training to treat blood disorders and cancer including Chemotherapy. The Hematologist/Oncologist will manage the care of the patient by constantly reviewing test results following cancer therapy, which could include chemotherapy and perhaps radiation therapy (Chemotherapy is administering chemicals to the patient which negatively affect the cancers.) If radiation therapy is involved the patient is referred to a specialist who knows about radiation therapy.

Medical Oncologists/Hematologists are trained in all general aspects of the medical management and treatment of cancer, including diagnosis, staging, supportive care, psychosocial aspects, and general palliative care. Their specialty’s role is to develop and prescribe appropriate drug related treatment regimens, including chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, newly developing treatments and participation in NCI based protocols.
