What is an Ophthalmologist?
An Ophthalmologist is a physician who is licensed to practice medicine and surgery, but who specializes in all aspects of eye and vision care. An ophthalmologist’s education typically includes four years of college, four years of medical school, one or more years of general hospital internship, and three or more years in a hospital-based eye residency program. In diagnosis and treatment the ophthalmologist uses and prescribes medicine, glasses and contact lenses, and when necessary, performs eye surgery.

Dr. Alexander Harris grew up in the Mohawk Valley and is passionate about caring for patients in this community. He graduated from Boston University Sargent College with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health and Rehabilitation. He earned his Medical Degree from the Commonwealth Medical College of Pennsylvania in Scranton, PA and completed post-graduate training at the Lehigh Valley Health Network in Allentown, PA. Dr. Harris completed his Ophthalmology Residency at SUNY Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse, NY. He is a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
He specializes in all aspects of eye and vision care. He is skilled in cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation, all forms of ophthalmic lasers and treatment of various eye diseases. He provides care for eye conditions including glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, dry eye and more.
Dr. Harris is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist.
